As reported last summer in MetroSports Magazine, the New York Metro area is a mecca of summer streetball leagues and tournaments. At venues like Gersh Park in Brooklyn, Orchard Beach Park in the Bronx, Archie Spigner Park in Queens, Gardella Park in White Plains, and Rucker Park, Dykman Park and Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan, summer streetball has been a fixture. Well, lets now add to that Yosemite Park!
No, not Yosemite National Park in California, but Yosemite Park on the border of Greenburgh and White Plains. Yes there is a park by that name on Yosemite Avenue with, among other amenities, an asphalt basketball court recently refurbished with support from the financial consulting firm, Earn Your Leisure. On Saturday, August 9th, 2025, the inaugural Westchester All-Star Game tipped off on featuring the two teams with players having roots in the 914 area code. And what talented players they were.

In a tightly fought championship battle, over 250 combined points were scored with the game not decided until the final minute of play. Organized by ‘The Pound’ and the ‘Theodore D. Young Community Center (TDYCC)’, the two All-Star teams included ‘Team MEECH’ and ‘Team FRAGG’.
Team MEECH was headed by Demetre ‘Meech’ Roberts, a local product of the Mt. Vernon High School basketball team who went on to play college basketball at St. Thomas Aquinas and Fairleigh Dickinson University. In his freshman year at college he was named East Coast Conference Rookie of the Year. Undrafted by the NBA, Meech went on to play professional ball in Europe, specifically Serbia.

Team FRAGG was led by Isaiah ‘Fragg’ Cousins, also a graduate of the Mt. Vernon H.S. basketball program who went on to a successful college basketball career at Oklahoma Univ. He was selected in 2nd Round of the 2016 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings where he was assigned to their G-League development team. Subsequently, he went on to a contract with the Utah Jazz and then to play professional ball in Israel and Europe. Locally, Isaiah has also played in the Ferris World summer tournament.

The game got off to an early 3-3 score in the first 30 seconds of play and ended the first quarter with Team FRAGG ahead by a 12 point margin, 42-30. Team FRAG maintained their lead through the first half but, toward the middle of the third quarter, Team MEECH pulled ahead, 77-75, but that lead was short lived. Team FRAGG came back with a scoring vengeance ending the third quarter with a commanding 106-89 lead. But Team MEECH did not quit closing the gap to 106-100 just minutes into the fourth quarter, tying the score at 110-110 with four minutes remaining, and staying within two points as the final minutes ticked by. In the end, Team FRAGG won by the final score of 133-128.
With his 26 points scored, Team FRAGG’s Marques Henry was declared M.V.P. followed closely in scoring by Zay Murphy with 25 Points and Tavien Tyler with 22. High scorers on Team MEECH were Demetre Roberts with 20 Points and Jimmy Bosque with 24.

With a Latin jazz festival taking place nearby in the park, action on the court was supported by the music of DJ Coley Cole and the real-time updates from the on-court announcer, M.C.: Kessy the Voice of Westchester. And our summary of this outstanding All-Star game wouldn’t be complete without recognizing the role of the “Theodore D Young Community Center” and “The Pound” and its CEO, Fred Bowers and for putting together this all star game. And again, thanks to “Earn Your Leisure” for the use of their brand new basketball court.
