In a season that is now noted in the NCAA record books, the New York University (NYU) Violets women’s basketball team has rewritten history with an extraordinary winning streak that continues to grow through the 2025–26 season.
This past Sunday, February 8, 2026, NYU secured its 82nd consecutive victory, a win that now stands as the longest in NCAA Division III women’s basketball history.

The Violets’ 69–58 victory over Carnegie Mellon University not only marked another dominant performance, but also officially broke the previous Division III record of 81 straight wins, held by Washington University in St. Louis, set during 1998–2001 seasons.
Although UConn’s Division I program holds the overall NCAA women’s basketball record with a 111-game streak, NYU now stands alone atop the Division III record books. Following back-to-back Division III national titles, the Violets have not lost a game since March 11, 2023.

NYU’s Head Coach Meg Barber, an NYU alum and former player with the Violets, has been widely credited with instilling a culture of discipline, selflessness, and consistency. Players frequently praise the team’s unity and resilience, qualities that have helped NYU win close games and impose its will upon opponents in blowout games alike.

As a player, Barber left NYU in 2002 as one of the program’s top scorers with 1,228 career points having served as team captain and leading the Violets to multiple postseason appearances. In fact, it was during Barber’s playing time as a member of the Violets that Washington University achieved its 81 consecutive win record that now, as the Violet’s head coach, Barber has helped surpass. As a member of the 2001-2002 Violets team, Barber and her teammates had suffered losses to Washington in both of their contests that season.
