A Metro NY Reigion Track & Field Powerhouse Sends Eleven to the New York State (NYSPHSAA) Champi
New Rochelle High School, a perennial powerhouse in New York metro region women's Track & Field, has capped off its 2017 outdoor season by sending 11 athletes to the 2017 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Championships to be held next week in upstate New York. MetroSports Magazine was on hand during day two of the State semifinals held at White Plains High School this past Friday evening. For those who have read our special racing issue published last month, this is the same New Rochelle High School that produced the 1903 world auto speed and endurance record holder and 1908 Briarcliff Trophy Race finisher, race car driver Guy Vaughan, one of NRHS's first graduates in the class of 1898.

Characteristic of the physical ability and mental toughness of Coach Capellan's team, Jeanneney Currie, a multi-event athlete showed the toughness and grit that will serve her well as she moves on to compete with the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, next year on a full scholarship. Suffering an ankle sprain and knee abrasion on one of her attempts at the high jump, it appeared that Currie's day was over and that her senior-year State Championship hopes were lost. Attended to by the athletic trainers on site and given the option by her coach, Currie sat out her final attempt at the high jump but took a shot at running one of the track events and, through her determination and physical conditioning, placed second behind team mate Olivia Morgan and qualified for her State Championship appearance.

In two short-distance track events, multi-event athlete Kiana Stallworth prevailed over talented fields of runners to take first place. Stallworth, a power-packed athlete who perhaps inherits some of her speed from former Washington Redskin and New England Patriot Donte Stallworth, her uncle, competes in sprint, middle distance, distance and long jump events also qualified for the State Championships. Stallworth, a senior, will be heading off to George Mason University next year on a full athletic scholarship.

Coach "Cap" has been at the helm of New Rochelle High School women's track and field for 37 years having produced over three dozen League and County Championship Titles and launching the college careers of numerous scholarship holders and Division I competitors. He has been inducted into the New Rochelle Sports Hall of Fame, and the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame. When not coaching the New Rochelle High School team, Coach Cap can be found in the classrooms of The College of Westchester in White Plains, NY, where is is better known as Professor Capellan. In his capacity as Professor and Success Coach, he brings the same skill set and passion to helping guide college students towards successful graduation and rewarding careers.
